Washwood Heath Students to Learn About Muslim Soldiers On the 24 th March a group of Washwood Heath Technology College students will be learning about the role of Muslim and other Asian soldiers in the British Army whilst on a trip to northern France and Belgium. The group will be joined by Captain Naveed Muhammad, a serving officer in the British Army, for the day to help explain the significance of what the students are seeing. There will be also be an Imam accompanying them who will perform a remembrance service to memorialise the fallen soldiers. Over the course of the day the students will visit Neuve Chapelle in northern France which has memorials honouring soldiers of the Indian Army who fought in both of the World Wars and the Menin gate in Ypres, Belgium which contains the names of 54 896 soldiers who died during the First World War. Miss Shaw, the head of History said, “This visit will highlight the issue of Muslim and other Asian soldiers and show that the First World War has a direct influence on Muslim history, these memorials for fallen Muslim soldiers are largely forgotten and not on the normal beaten track. This visit will not only be memorable for these students but will really bring the topics they study alive.” This will be an excellent experience for the students, both bringing home the facts that they learn in their History lessons and highlighting how the integration within British society extends to the armed forces. |
